Anyway, we tried to get it to fly out of an open door and that failed, so then we were able to trap it in the narthex where it continued to fly around until (we think) it flew out of an open door there. If not, it's probably still hanging around waiting until nighttime...or for the next person that walks in tomorrow morning, which unfortunately would be our very jumpy secretary. Anyway, it certainly added to the excitement of the worship, and I personally found it hard to stop laughing after that. It reminded me of that episode of The Office when Dwight traps Meridith in the plastic bag with the bat, and Jim convinces Dwight that he's been turned into a vampire. The squirrel scene from Christmas Vacation was also playing through my head. I guess bats are a common visitor at Memorial, but this was my first encounter!
You just never know what ministry will bring your way!

If it ever happens again, grab a corn broom. It'll latch onto it, and you can then walk it outside and release it into its natural habitat, which is probably whatever hole there is to shimmy through back into the church's attic.
Can you tell that our church also has bat problems from time to time?
